Professor Gholamhossein Ranjbar Omrani

With deep sorrow, Dr. Gholamhossein RanjbarOmrani, professor of internal medicine and endocrinology and the faculty member of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences passed away on August 4, 2021 in Shiraz, Iran. He was a physician scientist and a superb teacher who always remains alive in the memories of Shiraz medical graduates. His demise is a great loss for his family, and the Iranian medical community, especially the internists and endocrinologists.

Gholamhossein Ranjbar Omrani was born in Qom on December 17, 1945. After elementary education, he entered the Din & Danesh, and Hadaf high schools in Qom and Tehran. In due course, he enrolled in the Shiraz University Medical School (SUMS) and received his MD degree in 1977 (Figures 1-3). He continued his medical training in the United States and studied internal medicine at the Pennsylvania University of Medical School in 1979. Subsequently, he started endocrine subspecialty training at the Colombia University Medical School and finally received the American board of internal medicine as well as the American board of endocrinology and metabolism. He returned to Iran in 1980. On his return, he joined the faculty of Department of Medicine at SUMS (Figures 4 and 5). Because of his outstanding competence, between 1982 and 1993, Professor Ranjbar Omrani became the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at SUMS. He also served as the Vice-chancellor for research in SUMS from 1990 to 1992, Chairman of the Department of Endocrine and Metabolism (1985-1996), and the director of the Endocrine and Metabolism Research Center in SUMS, between 2003 and 2014.2

As a tribute to several former eminent mentors of the Shiraz School of Medicine, between 2012 and 2019, five ceremonies were held for seven pioneering professors in Tehran and Shiraz and a five-volume set of ceremony books were published entitled ‘A Collection of Essays on History of Shiraz Medical School’. In May 2015, the fourth ceremony was held in Shiraz, in honor of Professor Mansour Haghshenas and Professor Ranjbar Omrani for their important services to the Shiraz School of Medicine (Figures 6 and 7).

He was a member of the Iranian Internal Medicine Board Examination until 2007 as well as a member of the Iranian Endocrine Subspecialty Board Examination from the beginning until 2014. He was a member of the Iranian Society of Endocrinology, Iranian Society of Internal Medicine and Iranian Society of Diabetes. He was an expert peer reviewer of several medical journals including the ‘Archives of Iranian Medicine’. In 2007, Professor Ranjbar Omrani as an ‘Excellent Researcher’ was granted ‘Dr. Haddavi’s Prize’ by the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences’ (Figure 8).2

From the beginning of his professional career up to the end of his life, for approximately four decades, Professor Ranjbar Omrani treated and saved many patients’ lives, taught medical students, residents and fellows as a dedicated teacher and carried out several novel researches, especially on prevalent thyroid disorders in Shiraz and other cities of the Fars Province in southern Iran. Accordingly, his colleagues and trainees always viewed him as a physician scientist, a high skilled clinician as well as a sincere teacher.

Professor Omani wrote more than 100 scientific articles in Persian and English2 including 23 papers which are available on the PubMed database.3

In conclusion, his memory will stay alive and his efforts will always be remembered by his colleagues and former residents and students. We convey our sincere sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues.
